What is the “Forfait Mobilités Durables” (Sustainable Mobility Package)?
The Forfait Mobilités Durables (FMD) is a scheme introduced in France to encourage employees to use more eco-friendly means of transport for their home-to-work commute. It allows employers to cover, fully or partially, the cost of "sustainable" transport for their employees through an allowance that is exempt from social security contributions and income tax (within the legal limit).
What types of transport are covered?
The FMD includes several alternatives to private car use, such as:
🚲 Personal bicycles (with or without electric assistance)
🚗 Carpooling, as either a driver or a passenger
🚃 Public transport (excluding subscriptions)
🛴 Shared personal mobility devices (e.g. scooters, bikes, e-scooters)
🚶♀️ Walking (under certain conditions)
🚲 Shared mobility services (rental bikes, carsharing, etc.)
How much is the allowance?
The amount is freely set by the employer, within the following limit:
€700 per year per employee since 2022 (including up to €400 for fuel expenses if combined with a fuel reimbursement).
This amount is exempt from social charges and income tax, up to the same limit.
Good to know
The FMD can be combined with the 50% reimbursement of a public transport subscription.
It is part of a broader effort to promote cleaner mobility, reduce car traffic, and improve air quality in cities.
